Alex Hamilton began playing the horn at the age of nine and was taught by Lizzie Davis. Shortly after, Alex began to study at Chetham's School of Music and passed the Performance Diploma of the ABRSM and the Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music during his time there. He was a member of the National Youth Orchestra and was a brass finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year 2010. That same year, Alex began studying at the Royal Academy of Music, where he was awarded a full scholarship. He went on to complete his Bachelor of Music course and gained a Master of Music degree, with distinction. He studied with Michael Thompson, Richard Watkins, Martin Owen and Katy Woolley.

Whilst studying at the Academy, Alex performed with the BBC Symphony and John Wilson orchestra and as guest principal horn with the Philharmonia, London Sinfonietta and the London Mozart Players. Towards the end of his final year of study, he was offered the co-principal horn position with the Orchestra of Opera North. In his first season he had the privilege of performing Wagner’s ring cycle.

Alongside his commitments with Opera North, he has played guest principal with orchestras including the BBC Scottish, BBC Philharmonic, Philharmonia, Royal Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Bournemouth and Royal Northern Sinfonia.
